Product review

I've recently discovered the most practical product. Because I don't use plastic to store any hot or warm food, it's made it challenging for me to store my dinner leftovers. I often end up spooning pasta dishes and soups into little mason jars - majorly messy and an all around pain in the neck.

So when I found these GlaStor airtight glass storage containers, I was beyond excited. Yes - I do realize most people don't get as excited as I do over container sets, but these really are the healthiest and most convenient way to store all your kitchen goodies.

Because the glass containers and air-tight silicone sealed lids are both BPA free, you don't have to be concerned about harmful pollutants contaminating your foods. Another great feature is that the containers neatly nest inside one another when you're not using them, which allows for optimum storage and stacking space in your cupboards. The tempered glass is also super lightweight and they're microwave- freezer- and dishwasher-safe too.

Purchase them directly through the Tribest website - they're available in a variety of sizes.

It's time to ditch the plastic - it's expensive, the containers always stain, the lids never snap on well, the plastic ends up in landfills, and they're filled with hormone disrupting chemicals. I promise you'll be happy with GlaStor.

California Chokes

We're back in New York City after our lovely trip to sunny California. It was a beautiful and invigorating trip - filled with relaxation, amazing hiking, wine, good food and friends. The California Coast is such a stunning part of our country...it was very hard to leave!

While we were on our coastal road trip, we drove through a town called Castroville, which unbeknownst to me, is known as artichoke farm country and even calls itself the "artichoke center of the world." Castroville takes great pride in it's crown jewel crop, the highly nutritious Globe artichoke; in fact, the town hosts an annual Artichoke Festival each May - so much pride! Interestingly enough, Castroville is where the iconic Marilyn Monroe, then known as Norma Jean Mortenson, got her start as the first ever artichoke festival queen.

We really enjoyed eating our 'chokes closest to their natural state...either baked or lightly steamed and then grilled.

Here are some beauties we had straight from the organic garden at the Treebones Resort.

To learn more about cooking and preparing chokes, check out The City Cook's blog post. There's also lots of youtube video's on how to prepare artichokes - so don't be intimidated!

I'm eager to make artichips from the Ocean Mist's website, an intriguing and healthy artichoke chip recipe that has minimal fat and no artificial additives.
